BNP for another trial if voted to power: Mahbub
Persons convicted in farcical trial would be acquittedNew Age Online
BNP chairperson’s adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain has termed as ‘farcical’ and reflection of ‘political vendetta’ the death sentence to Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for committing war crimes.
Mahbub also said Bangladesh Nationalist Party would try the ‘real war offenders’ along with the persons involved in the ongoing ‘farcical trial’ if the party voted to power. Persons who are now being convicted in the farcical trial would be acquitted through that trial, he added.
Mahbub made the remarks at a briefing organised by Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, the lawyers’ wing of BNP, at the Supreme Court Bar Association office.
BNP leader Moudud Ahmed at the same briefing said that the Forum was shocked at the death sentence to BNP’s standing committee leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
Moudud also termed as ‘unheard and unprecedented’ the ‘leakage of the details verdict in Salauddin’s case’ a day before the tribunal’s announcement.
He asked the government to make clear its stance about the leakage so that the credibility of the trial process stays transparent.
Moudud claimed that the verdict was not final and that an appeal would be filed against the tribunal decision.
Moudud hoped that Salauddin would be freed after being proved innocent by the apex court.
He also said Salauddin’s trial was not hold in line with the international standard and that the customary international law was not followed.
