Polytech students’ protest takes violent turn in placesNew Age Online
The local administration of Bogra district imposed Section 144 from 9:00am to 5.00pm from Thontonia bus stand to Bonani area Sunday, as Bogra Polytechnic Institute students locked in clashes with law enforcers, as part of the nationwide demonstration of polytechnic students since Saturday.
Earlier, the students of the institute vandalised a bus, five to seven CNG-run three wheelers in Thonthonia bus stand to Police line of Bonani-Matidali road in the town, and blockaded the road.
A chase and counter chase ensued as the law enforces rushed to the spot to free the road.
Md. Shafiqur Reza Biswash, deputy commissioner of Bogra directed the execution of Section 144 in the area ‘to avert any untoward incident.’
In Comilla, around 15 people, including eight policemen, were injured in clashes between protesters and cops at Sadar south upazila.
The scuffle took place as demonstrating students besieged the Bijaipur land office at around 11:30am and set it on fire.
On information, Upazila Nirbahi Office Fatema Jahan, along with police, rushed to the spot.
A clash ensued and protestors set ablaze the UNO’s vehicle and vandalised a police van.
Police charged batons and fired 80 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse them.
Seven people, including eight policemen, were hurt during the clash, said the UNO.
The protestors had kept the UNO confined to the local land record office till the filling the report at 3:00pm.
In Jessore, at least 20 protesting students of Jessore Polytechnic and privatised BCMC College, and a photo journalist, were hurt when they were attacked by transport workers along with Bangladesh Chhatra League and Juba League activists.
Locals said the clashes ensued when several hundred students, from both the two colleges, went on agitation, took to the street and ransacked 10 vehicles at around 9:30am, in front of the colleges.
As the information of damaging vehicles spread, a number of transport workers swooped on agitated students.
The transport workers also ransacked at least three college buses and two campuses of BCMC College.
