‘Smuggler’ killed in BGB ‘shootout’New Age Online
A suspected narcotics smuggler was allegedly killed in a ‘gunfight’ between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members and his fellows in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia district early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Samirul Islam, 32, son of Abul Qashem, also the resident of Jamalpur village of the same upazila.
A team of BGB forces raided Moyrampur-Goarpara village at around 1.30am when a gang was smuggling a consignment of contraband Phensidyl syrup from India through Pragpur frontier, BGB sources said.
The smugglers opened two rounds of fire and burst three crude bombs when BGB forces apprehended them.
The BGB men retaliated with five rounds of fire sparking a ‘gunfight’ that continued nearly 15 minutes, the BGB sources said.
Samirul died on the spot while his fellows managed to flee the scene. The BGB forces recovered 290 bottles of Phensidyl from the scene, said 32-BGB commander Lt Col Qazi Arman Hossain.
Arman denied the killing of the smuggler and told New Age that ‘We shot five rounds of blank fire, retaliating to the smugglers.’
The BGB troops were conducting drives across the border area to nab the criminals, he added.
Daulatpur police recovered the body at 9:30am today and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy, said district assistant police superintendent CA Halim.
A case was lodged in this connection.
