Steps to rein in road accidents needed
Road traffic accident has taken an alarming proportion across the country in recent times. At least, 10-12 persons die due to road accidents every day. Even in the capital Dhaka where vehicles usually need to run at snail’s pace due to traffic congestions in particular a number of pedestrians had died because of the same problem in recent weeks. As experts say, reckless driving is largely to blame for all this. Reportedly, more than half of the road transport drivers lack adequate training and licences. Even the communications minister has admitted the fact on more occasions than one thus far. Regrettably, however, the government has taken hardly any steps to address the problem till date. Moreover, giving in to the pressure on the part of the road transport workers’ leaders, particularly the shipping minister who heads the largest organisation of them, the government is likely to liberalise conditions for driving licence in defiance of people protesting at such steps for long. In fact, people in general need to continue to raise voice against the menace in order to mount pressure on the government.
