ICT serves contempt notices on Channel 24

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday issued notices to Channel 24 managing director and seven others and wanted to know as to why contempt proceedings would not be initiated against them for making comments in the case of BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
The tribunal set October 10 as deadline for their responses as some of their comments seemed before the ICT tantamount to contempt of court.
The war crimes case of BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, now awaits its verdict.
The comments were made in a talk-show ‘Muktobaak’ telecast by the private TV channel 24 on September 18.
The tribunal also asked discussants of the night’s talk-show---Gonosastho Kendro trustee Zafrullah Chowhdhry and Center for Sustainable Development secretary general and journalist Mahfuz Ullah---to appear before the tribunal physically and explain their position, if any.
It also asked the six other respondents, managing director of Channel 24, its chief executive officer, executive director, head of the programme, producer of the talk-show ‘Muktobaak’ and anchor Mahmudur Rahman Manna – not to re-telecast the September 18 talk-show.
On Tuesday, the chief prosecutor filed a petition before the tribunal seeking contempt proceedings against the respondents as the discussants opined that the rights of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury were denied in the war crimes trial.
They had observed that the statements were bound to create doubts about the proceedings of the tribunal.
Besides, the petitioner said the discussants also made contemptuous statements involving the Chief Justice, a judge of the High Court Division, the ICT judges as well as the judiciary in general.
The petitioner termed the remarks biased, baseless, utterly false, fabricated, motivated, and were made not in good faith.
Such remarks are made only to ‘scandalize’ the tribunal, its process of independent and fair trial and to undermine the confidence of the people in the integrity of this tribunal and its process, the petitioner alleged.
Earlier, the tribunal, in its own motion, deferred the date of order on a contempt notice against The Economist to November 4.
It also deferred the date of order on the contempt notice against Salauddin’s lawyer, AKM Fakhrul Islam, to November 11.
