80pc factories resume production in Gazipur: BGMEA
BGB deployed in Gazipur, protests unbridled in FatullahNew Age Online
Most of the apparel factories in Gazipur and Savar zone have resumed operation amid scattered protests by the workers demanding for a minimum monthly wage of Tk 8,100.
To contain agitation that may lead to any vandalism, the government has deployed forces of Border Guard Bangladesh in the industrial zone of Gazipur and neighbouring areas.
Former BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy has welcomed the BGB deployment. He said factories busy with Christmas production should be allowed to carry on their operations. ‘Presence of BGB personnel will work as a detrimental factor to any vandalism.’
He said most of the factories in Konabari and Gazipur areas have resumed operation. ‘I guess some 80 to 90 per cent factories have opened.’
Murshedy said it is important to let the factories operate ahead of Eid and Durga puja so that the workers can get payments to celebrate the religious festivals.
Md Mosharaf Hossain, assistant superintendent of Gazipur industrial police said to keep the situation under control, BGB has been deployed and they have started patrolling along the industrial belt.
In Savar, apparel workers at Zirani area in Ashulia took to the streets and blocked Nabinagar-Kaliakair road to realise their demand.
Reports of demonstration also came in from a factory in Mouchak area of Kaliakair upazila, in Gazipur.
In Narayanganj, thousands of apparel workers from different garment units of Fatulla blocked Dhaka-Narayanganj road at Shibu market area.
Their demonstration has caused traffic to come to standstill. Police of Fatulla thana and industrial unit rushed to the spot and cordoned the demonstrators.
Acting director of industrial police in Fatulla, Masud Ahmed said, the demonstrators launched an attack on police, pelting brick bats that left 20 cops injured. He said of them 3 were seriously hurt and were undergoing treatment at Khanpur hospital in the town.
