RMG workers snatch three fire arms of AnsarNew Age Online
The agitating apparel workers snatched three fire arms away from Ansar members during a clash at Gazipur sadar Monday morning, as the demonstration continued for the third consecutive day, locals said.
They said the workers tampered those arms, namely .303 rifles, and left those abandoned a few yards off the Ansar camp. The Ansar camp is housed in an apparel factory.
The commandant of Gazipur district Ansar Mir Alamgir Hossain said the Ansar members fired five rounds of bullets at about 9:00am to disperse the demonstrating workers.
During the action, some of the members came under attack, in which three of their fire arms were taken away, he added.
The commandant also said five Ansar members were injured during the clash.
He, however, claimed no fire arms were snatched away by the garment workers.
For the third straight day on Monday, apparel workers continued their protest in Gazipur to press home their demand for hike in their wages.
The RMG workers had started their demonstration since Saturday, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 8,000.
The managements of more than 100 RMG factories have already shut down their factories in Gazipur fearing vandalism.
Traffic movements on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways have been disrupted since 8:00am on Monday morning.
Clashes ensued when police tried to disperse the workers off the road around 8:30am. Police lobbed teargas shells in an attempt to bring the situation under control.
