Curfew in Hijla upazila of Barisal to avert untoward incident

Local administration clamped curfew in Hijla upazila town area from 6:00am Sunday till issuing further notice as rivals, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Chhatra League, called for coinciding and counter programmes at the same venue and time.
Mustafizur Rahman, acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Hijla, said the Section 144 was enforced from 6:00am Sunday till further order, following the direction of the higher authorities, as the JCD called workers conference and BCL called anti-fundamentalist rally at Iddo Society ground in Khunna area of the upazila town.
Mahmud Hasan Mamun, Barisal district JCD convener, condemned such move and said AL-BCL activists launched attacks on BNP-JCD activists at about 9:00pm Saturday and vandalised the stage.
Md Shohidul Alam, district magistrate and deputy commissioner, AKM Ehsan Ullah, police superintendent of Barisal have acknowledged the fact and said special police team has been deployed there.
Meanwhile, JCD called a half-day hartal in the upazila for Monday, protesting the attacks on JCD activists allegedly by BCL men and imposing section 144 to foil their scheduled Sunday programme.
