Framing of electoral code of conduct for 10th polls
EC studying electoral codes of other countries: CECNew Age Online
The chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, said on Sunday the Election Commission was studying electoral systems of other democratic countries to frame electoral code of conduct for the 10th parliamentary polls.
‘We are looking into how other democratic countries have framed their electoral codes. The electoral code of conduct of those countries is our guideline for formulating our electoral code of conduct,’ the CEC told reporters after a commission meeting at the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
Asked whether the commission would consult the political parties before finalizing the electoral code, Rakib said, ‘It depends on the situation.’
The CEC said the commission is studying electoral systems in different democratic countries including in the United Kingdom and India.
He said the commission would keep in mind, while formulating the electoral code of conduct, the principle that there must have a level-playing field for all.
‘We will have to formulate the electoral codes so that no one can get extra advantage during the electioneering,’ said Rakibuddin.
Asked when the commission would finalise the electoral code of conduct for the political parties as well as the candidates for the 10th parliamentary polls, the CEC said the commission had time in their hands to finalise the electoral code.
