The 48-hour countrywide general strike enforced by Bangladesh Jaamat-e-Islami continues amid stray incidents across the country for the last day.
At least 16 passengers including an Anti-corruption commission official were injured Thursday morning at the capital’s Dhanmondi area as the pickets threw brick chips to a commuting bus they were travelling by during the hartal hours.
The hartal will end 6.00am Friday.
The injured bus passenger was identified as Anti Corruption Commission deputy director Mir Joynul Abedin Shibli.
He was injured by the pieces of window glass of the bus with other passengers at about 9:15 am, as pickets threw brick chips.
Hartal activists also hurled 3-4 crude bombs in the area.
The pickets also threw 2-3 crude bombs at about 6:00am in Azimpur area.
In Khulna, Shibir activists exploded five crude bombs at about 6:30 am at Rupsha Bypass road and blocked the road by placing logs and burning tyres, officer in charge of Khulna sadar police station Shahabuddin Azad said.
Jamaat activists brought out a flash procession at Khalishpur area at about 8:30 am.
Police arrested a Shibir activist identified as Ariful Islam (22) from Phultala bazar area in Khulna at about 8:30am while he hurled a piece of brick targeting a police van, said officer in charge of Phultala police station.
Security forces including Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion are patrolling the city since early morning.
In Comilla, pickets brought out a procession in Kandirpar and Tomsam bridge area of the town at around 7:00am and hurled two crude bombs at Shasongacha area under Sadar upazila.
The officer in charge of Chauddagram police station, Ismail Miah, said, at least two covered vans were vandalised at Fagunkora and Cheora area under Chauddagram upazila at around 6:30am.
Two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed in Chauddagram upazila since 6:00am to maintain law and order.
In Barisal, pro-hartal activists torched three buses of city service parked at C & B Colony Garage at about 4:45 am.
Pro-Hartal activists also damaged a covered-van in the same area.
Police arrested three Jamaat-Shibir activists in connection with hartal violence from C & B road, said Shakhwat Hossain, Kotwali police station in charge.
The arrested were identified as Sanaullah and Rezaul, both are students of Barisal Government Brojo Mohan College.
Later, the arrested were sentenced two years jail by a Mobile Court.
Jamaat-Shibir activists blocked roads at Nabogram, Lakutia, Puran Para, Kalijira, Kashipur and Rupatali areas of the city.
In Kushtia, the Jamaat-Shibir activists blocked a local road at Bhadalia Mor under sadar upazila at about 7:30am by placing logs and burning tyres. The police fired at least five rounds of tear gas shells to break them up.
Belayet Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model police station acknowledged the matter.
In Gazipur, the pro-hartal pickets torched a bus at Bogra Bypass area on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway of the city, Thursday morning.
Nazrul Islam, 45, the driver of the bus, was critically injured while putting out the flame.
A group of 10-12 hartal supporters attacked the bus of VIP-27 Paribahan at about 7:45am and fled the scene after setting it on fire, said sergeant Iqbal Hossain of Naojor Highway Police outpost under Sadar upazila.
Later, local people including the bus driver and police, doused the flame.
Nazrul was critically injured during the effort to extinguish the fire, Iqbal Hossain said. He was rushed to local clinic and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
The police arrested 10 people in this connection.
The activists of Jamaat-Shibir damaged the panes of some vehicles at Barabari area Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, police arrested two Shibir men from Shibmari Mor area while the activists tried to bring out a procession in the morning. They hurled stones at police while the lawmen tried to disperse them.
