Govt exploring new labour marketsMd Owasim Uddin Bhuyan
The government is spending more time than ever before in the lookout for new markets for exporting workers.
Officials said that the government is taking an increasing interest in exporting workers in the backdrop of declining manpower exports, they said.
A high level delegation led by expatriates welfare and overseas employment minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain is due to visit South Africa, Botswana and Namibia from October 5 to 13 to explore the possibility of striking new labour markets, ensure speedy remittance flow through government channels and legalize illegal workers.
The delegation would include EWOE ministry secretary Zafar Ahmed Khan, bureau of manpower, employment and training director general Begum Shamsun Nahar, EWOE ministry joint secretary Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, foreign ministry director general Allama Siddique and minister’s private secretary Muhammad Ibhrahim.
Officially Bangladeshi has no record as to how many of its workers are working in South Africa.
However, experts say that they have reasons to believe that around 50,000 Bangladeshi workers were working in South Africa.
Workers from Bangladesh and other countries go to work in South Africa through irregular channels, usually crossing other African countries, they said.
Dhaka University professor of political science and founding chairperson of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit Tasneem Siddiqui said that the government must do homework before exploring new employment markets.
She also underlined the need for sustained follow up of decisions taken during visits by government high ups, usually a neglected area of exercise.
The government authorities in Bangladesh take little interest in follow ups, she said.
She told New Age that a substantial number of Bangladeshis were doing business in South Africa.
But they cannot remit money back home using formal channels, she said.
The government needs to sort things out to facilitate their remittance through formal channels, she said.
