SUNDARBAN is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It’s a matter of great pride that it a part of our country. It is also a great natural resource for the nation. In 1997, UNESCO has announced it as a world heritage site. Through research we have come to know that if Sundarban is not protected, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat will be diminished by invasion of natural calamities. Unfortunate but true is the fact that Sundarban is in the path of decline. Sundarban will be under danger if the government establishes coal-based Rampal power plant near it. Many countries across the world have highly criticised the decision to establish the Rampal power plant. For the establishment of this power project, about 1,834 acres of land is being captured. It is estimated that about 6,000 families will lose their shelter. We will lose a huge amount of agricultural resources.
Sundarban is regarded as the main source of livelihood for a large segment of the population. If the Rampal plant is constructed, Bangladesh will risk losing Sundarban forest, 40 per cent of which is within our country, protecting us from several natural calamities. Our protests all over the country against the power project will help to save Sundarban. It’s time for people to unite to save our pride and motherland.
