At least 20 injured as the the ruling Awami League-backed students organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked on Rajshahi College students who blocked Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in front the main entranc of the college in the city on Tuesday.
Witnesses said that over two hundred students of the college brought out a procession at about 11:00am pressing for lessening session jam, establishing National University offices in every divisional headquarters and curbing corruptions at the National Universities.
After parading around the campus, the students blocked Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in front the entrance of the college setting tyres on fire.
They also set the effigy of National University examination controller on fire.
At one stage Chhatra League men attacked the protesting students, while the police also charged baton and fired tear gas shells on the protesters, the witnesses said.
Of the injured, management department third year students Himel, Mehedi, Abu Sufian, Abdur Rouf, English department student Koushik were hospitalised.
The police also arrested third year English department student Kamruzzaman and chemistry department student Jewel Rana.
Chhatra League Rajshahi city unit president Shahikuzzaman told New Age that the Chhatra League men dispersed the students as they blocked the highway.
Boalia police station officer-in-charge Ziaur Rahman Zia said that they charged baton to clear the highway.
Rajshahi College principal Ali Reza Abdul Mohammod Mozid told New Age that students should not go for violence. He said that actions would be taken against the attackers if the inured students filed any complaint.
