ACC appeals again for quashing Jesmine’s bailStaff Correspondent
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Monday again appealed to the High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to Hallmark Group chairman Jesmine Islam in 11 cases of embezzling funds of the state-owned Sonali Bank.
In its appeal, the ACC said that Jesmine had flouted the order of the lower court which on August 4 granted her bail in 11 cases on the condition that she would repay the money embezzled by Hallmark Group from Sonali Bank in monthly installments of Tk 100 crore.
The appeal said that the condition made it clear that Jesmine’s bail would be automatically cancelled if she failed to repay a single installment and in that case she has to surrender in the court on the following day.
‘She is no more on bail and is a fugitive as she has flouted the bail condition that she would repay the first installment on September 4,’ said the ACC
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury suggested the ACC counsel Khurshid Alam Khan to come up with the petition on Tuesday.
The ACC filed the appeal for cancelling Jesmine’s bail in reference with the order of the High Court’s vacation bench on September 1 that had asked the Dhaka deputy commissioner and the lower court’s order on Jesmine’s bail to explain in three weeks the legality of her bail.
The commission on October 4, 2012 filed 11 cases against seven officials of the Hallmark Group, including Jesmine’s husband Tanvir Mahmud, also Hallmark managing director, and 20 officials of Sonali Bank over their alleged involvement in the swindling more than Tk 1,568.39 crore, given to the group in cash, out of Tk 2,686 crore that had been embezzled.
