Clash between Hasanat, Hiron groups wounds 11 in BarisalNew Age Online
At least eleven persons were injured during a clash between activists of Barisal district Awami League unit president Abul Hasanat Abdullah and city corporation ex-mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron on Monday afternoon.
Police fired 2 sound grenades, 11 teargas canisters, 9 round rubber bullets to control the situation.
Witnesses and party sources said Mohiuddin Babul alias Beai Babul, who supports Hiron, was physically assaulted by followers of Hasanat at Hotel Metropolitan in Dhaka Sunday night.
To protest the assault, followers of Hiron led by Jasim who is Bangladesh Chhatra League’s city unit president called a meeting at AL office in Barisal at about 11:00 am Monday.
Among the others BCL leaders of B M College Moin Tushar and Nahid Serniabad attended the meeting.
Later, activists of Hasant led by Abdur Razzak, the district’s BCL secretary, Jubo League leaders Rafikul Islam Khokan, Moazzem Hossain Chunnu, Zakir Hossain, rushed to the office and engaged in altercations.
Both group later engaged in scuffles with lethal weapons, such as sharp machete and brick bats at about 11:10 am.
Police force led by Atikur Rahman, assistant police commissioner of Barisal Metroplotan Police rushed to the spot.
The law enforcers charged batons, fired rubber bullets, sound grenades and tear gas cells to control the situation at about 12:00 pm.
The city’s roads were blocked at the areas of Sadar Road, Fakirbari Road, KBS Hemayetuddin Road and Fazlul Huq Avenue for about an hour during the incident.
One police constable became sick by their own teargas, witnesses said.
Nahid Serniabad of Hiron group said Khokan, Chunnu, Zakir accompanied by Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists launched attack on them.
Razzak of Hasanat group said they only protested activities of some persons, which were affecting party’s tradition and discipline.
Police have been deployed in the AL office and surrounding areas in Barisal.
Officer in charge of Kotwali police station Shakhawat Hossain said no case was lodged in this connection.
