Sakib denies political ambitionStaff Correspondent
All-rounder Sakib al Hasan denied any intention of joining politics after he came under fire from many corners for attending a political programme hosted by ruling political party Bangladesh Awami League
Awami League organised the programme titled Vision 2021 on Friday at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre to describe its achievements in the past five years.
The son of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, initiated the programme that also gave an idea about the party’s manifesto for the next general election.
Sakib’s presence in the political programme sparked a debate among the common people, many of whom argued that personalities like Sakib should be kept out of any such programme as they are the symbol of national unity.
The reaction did not go unnoticed to the former national skipper and he cleared himself by tweeting, where he denied to having any plan of taking up politics in his life.
‘Let me clear myself...I am not joining politics and I don’t have any intention of joining politics in my life,’ Sakib tweeted on Saturday.
‘So I would request you guys please not to trust our media. I hope I have cleared myself,’ Sakib said for his followers.
‘I was requested by the board president to join the programme on behalf of the cricket team and I haven’t said a single word about politics,’ said Sakib.
Sakib is one of the few cricketers who earlier avoided joining Gono Jagoron Mancho despite a similar request from the Board high-ups. Many national players joined the Shahbag programme, which was not taken well by a section of the society.
