EC to avoid involvementNew Age Online
The Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Wednesday that the Election Commission does not want to engage in any move to ensure participation of all political parties in the 10th parliamentary polls.
He said the EC rather wants to play the role of a ‘referee’.
Rakibuddin was talking to reporters after a meeting with the visiting delegation of European Union at the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
After the meeting, EU ambassador in Dhaka William Hanna said they want free, fair, credible and participatory polls in Bangladesh.
‘We have talked about the EC’s preparations for holding the polls and we are satisfied with its technical preparation,’ he said.
Asked whether the EU would send its election observers, he said the visiting team would put forth their reports to their headquarters and then the headquarters would take a decision in this connection.
As reporters drew the CEC’s attention to the aspiration of the EU of holding a participatory poll, Rakib said, ‘We will also want participatory elections.’
Asked if the commission can launch any initiative to reach a consensus among the political parties to bring them to the polls, the CEC said, ‘We are a referee. It is better for us not to get embroiled in this affair.’
‘You, the media, take steps to create consensus among political parties,’ he added.
