Walton to sponsor DPL 2013Staff Correspondent
Leading electronics manufacturer Walton Group has earned the sponsorship rights for the Dhaka Premier League, a Bangladesh Cricket Board official said on Monday.
Walton, sponsor of the previous edition of the DPL, was awarded the deal after being the only party interested in the league, which had been dealing with uncertainty from the very beginning.
Walton paid Tk 30 lakh for this season’s DPL, arguably the most prestigious 50-over competition in the country.
The company is expected to disburse more than Tk two crore by the time the limited-over tournament comes to an end.
‘[Walton] has remained with us and we hope they
will be with us in the future,’ acting BCB chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury said during the sponsorship signing ceremony.
Walton operative director Uday Hakim and executive director Jahid Hasan were present at the programme, along with Jalal Yunus, the chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis.
‘We are privileged to sponsor the tournament. We got the rights as we were the only interested party,’ said Hasan.
The champions will receive Tk ten lakh, while the runners-up will receive Tk nine lakh.
The third and fourth-place teams will get Tk eight and seven lakh respectively from the BCB.
Walton will also distribute several prizes during the course of the tournament.
Bangladesh national team coach Shane Jurgensen told reporters on Monday that there was a good chance that the DPL super league matches will be telecast live.
