Enact formalin control act: Writ PetitionerNew Age Online
A writ petition filed Sunday sought directives for the government to take necessary steps to pass a new ‘Formalin Control Act 2013’ with a provision for capital punishment for food and drinks adulterators.
The Act could be passed in the upcoming parliamentary sessions, scheduled for September 12, the petitioner observed.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond, who had filed the petition with the High Court Division, said, the petition is likely to be moved Monday.
The petitioner also prayed to the highest court for issuing a rule on the government to explain why it would not be directed to take immediate necessary, affirmative and effective steps to examine all food staffs in the city. Such drives should also test fishes, sweet and factories producing clothes for preventing use of formalin, melamine, carbide, burned Mobil poisonous chemicals, sulfur di oxide, and poisonous colour for securing public health.
Secretaries of various ministries such as, commerce, health, home, law, and environment ministries, the director generals of the Bangladesh Standards & Testing Institution and the health directorate, the inspector general of police and the Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner were made as respondents to the petition respectively.
