Holding polls keeping JS in place tough for EC: HafizNew Age Online
Election Commissioner Abu Hafiz Sunday said holding parliamentary elections keeping the parliament in place would be ‘tough’ for them.
The election commissioner made the remarks while talking to newsmen in his office.
He said it would be rather convenient for the EC to organise the general elections after dissolution of the House.
The 15th amendment to the Constitution of the republic was made keeping a provision that the general elections shall be held within 90 days prior to the expiry of tenure of the parliament.
When EC’’s attention was drawn to Saturday’s remark made by HT Imam, one of the advisers to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina where he said the government may take initiative to dissolve parliament before the 10th national elections if the EC wants so. The election commissioner, however, said the commission will not make any such proposal to the government.
‘It is a matter of the government to decide whether parliament will be dissolved before the polls and it is the matter of the government as well as the political parties to decide under what type of government the elections will be held. We will not make any proposal in this regard,’ said Abu Hafiz.
The election commissioner said the commission is not able to prepare the electoral code of conduct for the political parties as well as for the candidates as they are not aware if the polls would be held before dissolution of parliament.
