Traders will enforce a daylong strike in Sylhet city on Sunday as the police are yet to arrest the robbers and recover the looted gold ornaments even four days after the incident.
The business leaders at a meeting, held on Saturday afternoon at Nehar Market at East Zindabazar in the city, urged the traders and their employees to make the shutdown a success.
They also requested them to take part in a rally scheduled to be held at 2:30pm today at Court Point in the city.
The traders on Thursday night gave the law enforcers a 2-day ultimatum to arrest the robbers and recover the looted ornaments. The traders said they would enforce a daylong strike on Sunday if their demands were not met by this time.
A gang of armed robbers looted three jewellery shops at Nehar Market on Wednesday evening after exploding crude bombs and shooting dead a night guard.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional commissioner Mohammed Ayub told New Age that a case was filed against 11 unnamed robbers on Friday night.
He said four persons detained earlier were shown arrested in the case. They were Kabir Ahmed alias Heroin Kabir, 35, Abdul Jalil alias Pokra Jalil, 33, Nahid alias Kala Nahid, 30, and Omar Ali, 35.
‘We produced them before a magistrate’s court on Saturday and sought a 7-day remand to interrogate them,’ he said, adding that the court didn’t hold hearing on the remand prayer till the afternoon.
