Workshop on ancient martial art held in CtgMostafa Yousuf
A workshop on traditional Indian martial art known as Kalaripayattu, a combination of dance and martial art, is going on at the district Shilpakala Academy in Chittagong.
Artistes from different dance troupes of the port city are participating in the five-day workshop conducted by Kajol Hajra, a prominent Kalaripayattu dancer from Pashchimbanga, India.
The workshop organised jointly by Design Fashion and Art Foundation (DAFAF) and Wallis, a boutique house, will end tomorrow.
The participants of the workshop expressed their excitement of learning the art form from a skilled trainer.
Trainer Kajol Hajra also expressed his satisfaction. ‘We got highly inspired learners in Chittagong whose body flexibility seems to be favorable for the dance,’ he said.
‘Kalaripayattu is the combination of two words: first part Kalari means land and second part Payattu means practice centre,’ Kajol Hajra said, who learnt the art form from CVM Satta Narayan Nayar.
The organisers are also happy seeing the huge response from the participants. ‘We got 100 learners when the number was half when a similar workshop had been organised in Dhaka,’ general secretary of DAFAF AB Walli Ahmed Chowdhury told New Age.
Kalaripayattu was originated from Indian province Kerala indicating an enriched history of sub-continental martial art, a field where China and Japan leads the saddle. With the passage of time, the traditional dance style has been made more polished to be performed for the entertainment rather than self defense.
We launched the workshop from the first September and it will continue till the fifth September.
