Oishi sent to jailStaff Correspondent
Oishi Rahman, arrested on charge of killing her parents, was on Saturday sent to the Dhaka central jail from the Juvenile Development Centre two day after a court ordered the authorities to do so.
‘She was taken to the Dhaka central jail about 11:45am. We are making preparations to shift her to the women’s prison in Gazipur,’ the jailor, Mahbubur Rahman, told New Age in the afternoon.
Deputy jailor Shilpi Akhter told New Age that they received Oishi at the women jail in the evening and she was kept in a ward with general inmates.
A metropolitan magistrate on Thursday asked the authorities to send Oishi to the central jail after taking cognisance of her birth certificate submitted by the social services department.
Oishi’s birth certificate that the department officials obtained from a clinic in Khulna, where she was born, showed that Oishi was above 18 years and she was not entitled to stay with children in the juvenile development centre.
On August 27, Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond served separate legal notices to the
Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate, the secretaries to the home affairs and the social welfare ministry and the police seeking steps to shift Oishi to jail in 24 hours.
The magistrate’s court on August 24 sent Oishi, an O-Level student of Oxford International School, to the juvenile development centre in Gazipur in the case of killing her parents — Special Branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Raman — in their flat at Chamelibagh on August 17.
On August 17, Oishi surrendered to the police and later admitted in the presence of magistrates to being involved in the killing.
The legal notices said that the court had no jurisdiction to send Oishi to the juvenile development centre without having her age established by proper medical experts or radiologists.
The notices claimed that Oishi was 19 years old in keeping her birth certificate and Section 2(a) (F) of the Children Act 1974 does not allow authorities to keep an adult with children.
