Judge jailed for 4 yearsStaff Correspondent
A sessions court in Dhaka on Tuesday sentenced a senior assistant judge to rigorous imprisonment for four years on charge of possessing banned codeine syrup Phensedyl.
Dhaka additional sessions judge Ruhul Amin also fined the convicted judge, Javed Imam Tk 10,000.
Javed will need to serve two more months in jail if he fails to pay the fine, the court said in the verdict.
Javed was in the dock during the pronouncement of the verdict.
The 30-year-old, Javed Imam, who was on bail, was sent to jail following the verdict. He was looking gloomy.
His defence counsel Gopal Chandra Saha said that they would appeal to the High Court against the verdict as they were ‘deprived of justice.’
Additional public prosecutor SM Jahid Hossain said the prosecution would also appeal against the verdict as the court gave Javed a lesser sentence under a section of the Narcotics Control Act 1990 although he was charged under another section of the act that warranted death sentence or life term imprisonment.
The court had recorded the depositions of 10 prosecution witnesses including police officers in the case.
On December 1, 2012, traffic police sergeant Mizanur Rahman had arrested the then senior assistant judge of Bhola, Javed, in New Market area in Dhaka along with his licensed pistol and his microbus.
The police said Javed was transporting 342 bottles of Phensedyl by his microbus from Jessore on his way to Bhola.
Javed was produced before the media soon after his arrest with the bottles of the contraband syrup, triggering anger among the judges and criticism against police’s professionalism.
Javed was then suspended and had been attached to the law ministry as he was also facing another departmental proceeding in connection with his alleged irregularities when he was posted in Jessore.
