Mannan, Hayat receive Nazrul Award 2012Cultural Correspondent
Veteran Nazrul singer MA Mannan and researcher Anupam Hayat received Nazrul Award 2012 on Sunday at the seventh Nazrul convention held at the National Museum auditorium.
Nazrul Institute awarded these two eminent personalities with the prestigious Nazrul Award for their noteworthy contribution to Nazrul works and practices in the country.
Nazrul Institute cited MA Mannan as one of the Nazrul exponents who, in his melodious voice, has been entertaining the audience of the country with Nazrul songs retaining their original flavour since 1965. He has also founded a school named Dolon Chapa to teach songs of the same genre in 1979.
The institute cited Anupam Hayat as one of the researchers of the country who has published a number of well-researched and valued books on Kazi Nazrul Islam. Hayat has also published research on the history of Bangladeshi films and others.
‘As a singer and a music aficionado, I love to sing and hear Nazrul’s songs in its original composition. But I have not taken a robust position against any experiment with Nazrul’s songs’, said MA Mannan.
The veteran singer opines, ‘Contemporary time demands a contemporary flavour, so it is quite natural that modern instruments will be infused to add more dimensions and that should be welcomed by us’.
At the same time, Mannan emphasises that the original compositions of the songs must be preserved and practised, and the responsibility befalls on Nazrul Institute. He is glad that the institute has taken initiatives to preserve Nazrul’s songs in its unaltered form.
Researcher Anupam Hayat, who has published eight research works on Nazrul, shared his experiences of doing research on Nazrul.
‘I have worked on fields like Nazrul as a playwright, Nazrul in films, Nazrul in songs. Still I feel there is larger scope for research work on Nazrul. A talent like Nazrul is inexhaustible and it is indeed rewarding for a researcher to study him and his works’, said Anupam Hayat.
Hayat also opines that the only problem for a passionate researcher is that he/she does not get enough help from the academic arena. ‘Researchers who are really interested and passionate should be sponsored and promoted by institutes’, obsereved Hayat.
Both of the award recipients expressed their joy and gratitude for being honoured with the Nazrul Award.
