ACC receives Tk 7.43 crore laundered by KokoNew Age Online
The Anti-Corruption Commission received Tk 7.43 crore ($956387.40) Tuesday afternoon, which was laundered by Arafat Rahman Koko, the youngest son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Attorney general Mahbub-e-Alam handed over the cheque to ACC chairman M Bodiuzzaman at the commission’s headquarters in the city.
Earlier on January 3 this year, the ACC received Tk 1.5 million (Tk 15 lakh) in interest on the S$2.04 million laundered by Koko and recovered by the commission.
The commission had received the money from an account kept with the Sonali Bank.
The commission on November 22 recovered the money from the same account with the Ramna Corporate Branch of the bank.
The commission filed a case against Arafat on March 17, 2009 on charge of laundering the money he had illegally obtained from a German company, Siemens, and other sources, in exchange of helping them get government contracts.
The ACC in the case dealt with Arafat’s dealings with China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd in a Tk 351 crore contract for construction of the New Mooring Container Terminal and with Siemens in a Tk 239 crore contract for the supply and installation of equipment for the state-run mobile operator Teletalk.
A few other people also gave money to Arafat that was deposited in two of his five bank accounts in Singapore detected by the commission. Four of the accounts are with United Overseas Bank and the fifth with the CIC Bank.
