Foreign missions meet EC over next national pollsNew Age Online
Heads of 14 foreign missions in Dhaka, including the United Nations, hoped on Tuesday that the upcoming 10th parliamentary polls would be free, fair, credible and inclusive.
The Election Commission, while meeting with the heads of 14 foreign missions in Dhaka, including the United Nations, too hoped for 'credible and well-participated' 10th polls.
The commission said it did not decide yet whether to take any steps like holding dialogues with political parties to pave the way for holding a participatory poll.
‘We have exchanged our views on our mutual hopes for a free, fair, credible and inclusive election,’ United Nations Residential Coordinator in Dhaka Neal Walker said.
He spoke to reporters after a 90-minute meeting at the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.
Neal Walker said the key partners and countries which provide support in Bangladesh’s election process, through the EC, met the commission to discuss the preparations for the 10th parliamentary polls.
‘We have been arranging this meeting for United Nations with key partners and countries which are providing support to the electoral process in Bangladesh through the Election Commission,’ he said, adding, ‘we have come here to know what the EC is doing with regards to its preparations for the upcoming polls.’
The CEC echoed Neal Walker. ‘Representatives of the donors and development partners that provide the commission with technical assistance through the United Nations Development Programme met us to discuss the election preparations for the next polls,’ said Chief Election Commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
The 10th parliamentary elections are due by January 24, 2014 as the election period should begin by October 27 in keeping with the related constitutional provision.
