Former judge sentenced to jail for smuggling drugsNew Age Online
The Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge’s court-2 Tuesday sentenced to four years rigorous imprisonment former senior assistant judge Javed Imam on charge of possessing banned codeine syrup Phensedyl.
Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Ruhul Amin delivered the verdict.
The court on August 7 had set Tuesday for the verdict after wrapping up the hearing in the case.
The court had recorded 10 witness accounts in the case, including those of police officers.
On December 1, 2012, traffic police sergeant Mizanur Rahman arrested the then senior assistant judge of Bhola, Javed Imam, from the New Market area in Dhaka.
The police claimed 342 bottles of Phensedyl were found in the microbus he was driving.
Javed was produced before the media soon after his arrest with the bottles of the contraband syrup, triggering anger among judges and criticism against police’s conduct.
The 30-year-old Imam is now out on bail.
The suspended judge had been attached to the law ministry as he is also facing another departmental proceeding in connection with alleged irregularities when he was posted in Jessore.
