National Committee asks govt to realise Niko compensationStaff Correspondent
The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports has urged the government to take steps for realising compensation from oil company Niko responsible for the blast in an oil field at Tengratila in Sylhet in 2005.
The government has taken step to realise compensation of Tk.746 crore from Niko for the blast.
But the national committee leaders at a meeting at its office on Thursday said that the amount of compensation claimed from Niko should be Tk. 22,000 crore.
The investigation committee formed by the government assessed the compensation conservatively and the commission formed by the independent experts assessed the compensation should be Tk. 22,000 crore, the committee leaders claimed.
The meeting in a resolution condemned the government initiatives of revising the Model Production Sharing Contrat-2008 for the offshore gas fields and said it would be contrary to the national interests.
The national committee will observe Phulbari Day on August 26. On that day in 2006, four people were killed in police firing on a protest rally at Phulbari.
The committee has chalked out programmes both at Phulbari and centrally in Dhaka city to observe the day and called on people to make the programmes successful.
The national committee condemned giving environmental impact certificate for setting up Rampal Coal-Based Power Plant jointly with an Indian company.
The national committee will hold a five day Dhaka-Rampal road march on September 24 to 28 for cancellation of the power plant project as it would be harmful for the Sundarbans.
Chaired by convener of the committee Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, the meeting was attended, among others, by its member secretary Anu Muhammad, members Mohammad Enamul Haque, Kallol Mostafa, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Ragib Ahsan Munna, Zonayed Saki and Abdus Salam.
