WAR CRIMES TRIAL
Quasem’s charge hearing order on Aug 29New Age Online
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Wednesday, after hearing from both defence and prosecution, set August 29, for passing an order whether to indict detained Jamaat executive council member Mir Quasem Ali.
Prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon and Tapas Kanti Baul pleaded for indicting Mir Quasem Ali on 14 counts of war crimes, saying that Quasem committed crimes against humanity in Chittagong during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.
Simon said Quasem was the general secretary of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and he had played a superior role in committing crimes against humanity.
Quasem’s defence lawyer Tanvir Ahmed Al-Amin sought his client’s discharge from the crimes against humanity charges.
The prosecution on May 16 had submitted formal charges against Quasem on 14 counts of crimes against humanity committed at different places in Chittagong.
The tribunal on May 26 took cognizance of all the charges and set today (June 27) for hearing on charge framing.
Quasem was arrested on June 17, 2012 on allegation of 1971 war crimes.
