WAR CRIMES CHARGES AGAINST SUBHAN
Prosecution gets 4 more weeks to submit chargesStaff Correspondent
The International Crimes Tribunal–1 on Monday again allowed four more weeks for the prosecution to submit its formal charges against detained war crimes accused and Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer Abdus Subhan.
The tribunal fixed September 15 to submit the formal charge against Subhan or to submit a progress report in case of failing to submit the formal charges on that day.
Monday was set for either submission of formal charges or a progress report of investigation before the ICT-1. Prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon, however, submitted a progress report.
Simon submitted to the tribunal that the investigation against Subhan was at the last stage and they needed some more time to scrutinise the information that the investigation agency had got.
He sought an adjournment of the proceedings of the case until September 15 and the tribunal allowed it.
The tribunal also directed the prison authorities to produce Subhan before the tribunal on the day.
Earlier on June 13, the tribunal asked the prosecution to submit its formal charges or at least progress report against Subhan on July 14, but the date has now been deferred to August 19.
The tribunal also set August 22 for hearing on a prosecution plea seeking the tribunal’s permission to interrogate Subhan in Safe Home of the ICT for two-days. The prosecution had submitted the petition on August 12.
Sobhan, now 84, was arrested on September 20, 2012, following a warrant issued against him by a Pabna court and was later shown arrested in the case of committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
According to the prosecution, Subhan was the Pabna chapter Jamaat ameer just before the liberation war and had formed auxiliary forces like Peace Committee, Al-Badr and Razakar in his locality and committed crimes against humanity there.
