FF says Nizami ordered carnage, plunderNew Age Online
A freedom fighter on Monday described the atrocities during Bangladesh’s Liberation War carried out by Razakars, Al-Badr and Pakistani occupation army at a Pabna location.
The freedom fighter, Jane Alam alias Janu, said those collaborating forces had murdered, carried out arson attacks and plundered houses in his village of Brishalikha under Bera in Pabna on December 3, 1971, complying orders of the erstwhile Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.
Testifying as the 16th prosecution witness against Nizami, the freedom fighter Jane Alam alias Janu said that he heard about all these from the senior citizens of his village.
Janu, now 60, said that Nizami the president of the then Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, Islami Chattra Sangha had ordered a local Al-Badr commander Rafiqun Nabi Bablu to rage the massacre in his village following an order of Nizami.
The witness said that after the historic March 7, 1971 speech of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, they received armed training to take part in the Liberation War and after 15 to 20 days’ training they made a camp at Dabbagan, now known as Shahidnagar, by looting 14 police rifles of Bera police station.
He said they fought on the front line against the occupation army of Pakistan and later retreated as they (freedom fighters) could not stand strong.
Janu then said they then went to India for further training and came home back in mid-August, 1971 and took military position in Shahjanir Char in Tangail. They--- some 50 to 60 freedom fighters---then got divided in to small groups and set up camps.
He said his group went to Dugli village under Shahjadpur in Sirajganj and set up a camp there.
The witness said he went to visit his family members along with his co-freedom fighter and villager Sohrab to his village Brishalikha during a night following December 2, 1971. On the night of December 3, 1971, his parents noticed movements of Razakar, Al-Badr and Pakistani army in the village, he testified.
He said his father then asked him to run away from the house and he fled and went back to his camp by crossing the river Hurasagar.
He said he returned to his village the next day and found the anti-liberation forces had left.
He said his comrade Sohorab was killed by collaborators’ bayonets and gun-shots. The other villagers who were also killed were: Shosthi, Vadu, Monu, Profulla and Pintu.
He said that at least 70 to 72 houses of his village were burnt at that night.
Later Nizami’s defence lawyer Mizanul Islam cross-examined him.
As his cross-examination ended, the tribunal adjourned proceedings of the case until August 25.
Nizami, indicted on May 28, 2012 on 16 counts of crimes against humanity, was in the dock.
