EC to amend JS polls code of conduct before election : Shah NawazStaff Correspondent
Election commissioner Shah Nawaz on Sunday said the Election Commission would bring about changes to the parliamentary electoral code of conduct weighing context to be evolved before the polls schedule.
‘We have already an electoral code of conduct for candidates and political parties in parliamentary polls and we have no plan right now to bring any changes to it,’ Shah Nawaz told reporters at his office at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
‘We can bring changes to the code of conduct only just before announcing the election schedule weighing the situation at that time,’ he added.
Asked whether the EC has taken such a stance only to become sure about the type of election-time government before bringing any changes to the code of conduct, the election commissioner said, ‘We will make the changes considering the evolving situation at that time.’
‘We will also look as to whether the EC will at all need to amend the electoral code of conduct,’ he added.
Asked about a draft electoral code of conduct prepared by a three-member committee of the EC, he said the committee has submitted its report and the commission would look into it only when time comes.
The committee in its report proposed that none but the chief of the political parties along with other 20 top party leaders as chosen by the party chief would be allowed conducting countrywide election campaigning.
In response to a question regarding the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the election commissioner said the EC has employed one of its senior officials to collect the certified copy of the High Court judgment that declared the Jamaat registration with the EC illegal.
‘We will make a decision shortly after getting the certified copy in our hands,’ he added.
