ACC seeks revoking Jesmine’s bailNew Age Online
The Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday filed eight more petitions before the High Court, seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Hallmark Group chairman Jesmine Islam in 11 cases relating to loan scam by the group.
On August 13, the commission had filed three similar petitions.
Jesmine was released on bail from jail on August 4 soon after Dhaka senior special judge Zahurul Haq granted her bail in the 11 cases. The condition set was that she would pay Tk 100 crore every month to the state-owned Sonali Bank from where the fund was swindled. She is supposed to return the entire embezzled fund.
The ACC prayed to the High Court for issuing a ruling on the government and Jesmine to explain the legality of her bail order.
The appeal said an accused of the much-talked about Hallmark scam does not deserve bail at this stage of the investigation.
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said the appeal is likely to be moved Monday to the relevant vacation bench.
On October 4, 2012, the commission filed 11 cases against seven officials of Hallmark Group, including its managing director Tanvir Mahmud and 20 officials of Sonali Bank, including its former managing director Humayun Kabir, for the embezzlement of over Tk 1,568.39 crore from the largest state owned bank.
