Hearing on Azhar’s charge framing deferredNew Age Online
The International Crimes Tribunal 1 on Sunday deferred the date of charge framing against Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam to August 29.
The tribunal deferred the date responding to a defence plea seeking an adjournment on the ground of needing more preparation.
Today was the scheduled date for hearing on charge framing but Azhar’s defence lawyer M Tajul Islam submitted an application seeking adjournment and said they were yet to go through all documents provided by the prosecution.
Prosecutor Saiful Islam opposed the defence plea and said the petition was submitted only to waste the tribunal’s time.
Azhar, now 60, was the Rangpur unit president of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and the commander of Rangpur district Al-Badr during the liberation war, according to the prosecution.
Azhar was arrested on August 23, 2012 and produced before the tribunal after three days.
