The Bangladesh Under-23 cricket team chased down Singapore’s 121 with 140 balls to spare, thrashing the hosts by eight wickets in the opening Group B match at the Asian Cricket Council Emerging Teams Cup 2013 on Saturday.
The Under-23 bowlers stifled host Singapore from the early stages, eventually bowling the minnows out for 121 in 47.1 overs. Noor Hossain led the attack, picking up four wickets for just 25 runs in his 10 overs.
Taijul Islam (2/19, 9.1 overs), Sabbir Rahman (2/24, 10 overs) and Mahmudul Hasan (1/24, 10 overs) all went for under three runs an over to help leave the visiting batsmen with a paltry total to chase.
Anish Param provided Singapore’s only resistance, scoring 37 from 89 balls.
In response, Under-23 opening batsman Soumya Sarkar and wicketkeeper-batsman Mithun Ali put together a 95-run second-wicket partnership to take the Under-23s within 14 runs of victory at the Kallang Ground before Mithun fell on 43. Sarkar finished with an unbeaten 65 off 81 balls.
The eight-country competition features Under-23 squads from Test nations Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and senior squads from emerging nations Singapore, Nepal, Afghanistan and the UAE.
The Bangladesh Under-23s face the Sri Lanka Under-23 sise today at the Padang Ground.
