Police say daughter involvedStaff Correspondent
Oishi Rahman who was arrested after her surrender on Saturday afternoon was involved in the murder of her parents, Special Branch inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman, the Detective Branch said at a briefing.
Mahfuzur and his wife were found dead in their house at Chamelibagh in the capital Dhaka on Friday.
Mahfuzur’s brother Moshihur Rahman filed a murder case with the Paltan police, without naming anyone.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner Monirul Islam at the briefing said that Oishi had drugged her parents unconscious by mixing sedative in coffee.
The police have so far arrested three people, including Oishi, in connection with the murder. Others arrested are domestic help Sumi Begum, 11, and Sumi’s friend Roni alias Joni.
The police also picked up five more people, including guards and caretaker of the building that housed the flat where the couple were stabbed to death.
The detained include Oishi’s friend Trisha, in whose house Oishi passed Thursday night, the caretaker Amzad Ali and guards Shahinur and Motaleb.
Monirul said that they had some clues to the motive of the murder but declined details in the interest of investigation.
Oishi, 16, an O-Level student in Oxford International School, earlier about 1:00pm surrendered to the Paltan police. She was later taken to the office of the Motijheel police deputy commissioner and then to the Detective Branch office.
A team of detectives, along with her, raided places in the capital and arrested the three a and detained the five from Basabo and Manda, the DMP deputy commissioner said.
The DB official said that Oishi, who had been in hiding till her surrender, had taken gold in two bags along with her. The police later seized the gold.
Oishi left their flat on Thursday morning and roamed about the capital in an auto-rickshaw and asked the driver to keep their domestic help in his house. And she stayed in the house of Trisha at Kakrail, the DB official said.
The inquest report said that Mahfuzur had been stabbed with a dagger in the abdomen and he throat. Swapna was stabbed in 11 places in the body.
A police official told New Age that the couple might have been stabbed in bed and were then carried into the bathroom where the bodies were found.
The mattress of the bed was soaked in blood. The police also seized a knife and a machete from the house.
The DMCH forensic department’s assistant professor Sohel Mahmud, who ran the post-mortem examinations, said that the nature of the murder and the number of stab wounds suggested that the killers were amateurs.
He said that they had sent the viscera and blood sample to the Forensic Lab at Mahakhali for further examination.
The caretaker Amjad on Friday night said that Mahfuzur had asked him on August 4 to keep an eye on his daughter so that she could not leave the house.
Oishi’s uncle Iftekharul Islam told New Age that she lived an indisciplined life and often returned home late.
Mahfuzur joined the police in 1987 and worked on peacekeeping missions twice in Kosovo.
The first namaz-e-janaza of the couple was held at the Rajarbagh Police Line mosque. The bodies were sent to to Haluaghat in Mymensingh for burial.
