AL leaders to start cross-country tour after Aug 20Hasan Major
Central leaders of the Awami League are set to undertake a countrywide tour after August 20 to prepare the party’s grassroots units for the general elections as well as evaluate the popularity of the incumbent party lawmakers and aspirant candidates.
The tours have also been designed to project the government’s development activities before the mass people and to face up to BNP’s propaganda and movement against the government.
BNP has been demanding that the next general elections be held under a non-party caretaker administration.
During the tour of the districts, public meetings and workers’ rallies would be organised in towns and at grassroots level for strengthening the local units and restoring confidence among the grassroots activists.
The central leaders will also declare organisational committees for some districts during the tours.
AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim told New Age that senior leaders in several groups would visit the districts to conduct a political campaign, take preparations for the next polls, evaluate the party’s organisational strength at the grassroots, resolve intra-party feuds and evaluate the acceptability of party’s aspirant candidates among the people.
‘Each of the teams will be assigned to visit three to four districts and they will stay in the areas for 15 to 30 days,’ he said adding that after the tour each of the teams would submit a detailed report on the tour before the party president Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister.
A senior AL leader told New Age that the fate of the party’s aspirant candidates for next general elections would largely depend on the teams’ reports.
Besides, the AL high command will take many decisions and actions ahead of the polls based on the reports of the teams, he added.
The AL leader said that prime minister Sheikh Hasina would sit with the central leaders before they undertake the tour and give them a guideline for making the tours successful.
AL insiders said that in the meetings of the advisory council and central working committee scheduled for August 17 and 18 respectively at Ganabhaban, Sheikh Hasina might give the senior leaders the guidelines.
AL organising secretary BM Mozammel Haque, also a lawmaker, said during the campaign the ruling party would lay importance on restoring confidence among the grassroots leaders and activists alongside countering the anti-government propaganda of BNP-Jamaat-Hefajat before the polls.
He said the party leaders would brief grassroots leaders and activists about the government’s successes and failures and the anarchy and corruption during the previous BNP-led government.
AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam after a meeting of the AL working committee last month had told reporters that the ruling party would exert all its strength to face up to the false campaign and conspiracies of BNP, Jamaat and Hefajat-e-Islam against the government after Eid-ul-Fitr.
He said the party’s campaign teams would drum up support for the AL-led government before the next elections.
The AL is also forming separate groups comprising leaders and activists of its front organisations like Juba League, Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League, Mahila Awami League and Olama League and cultural personalities to assist the main teams in conducting political campaign at the grassroots.
