50 injured as police, BNP men clash in TangailOur Correspondent . Tangail
At least 50 people were injured as police fired rubber bullets, used tear gas and charged batons to disperse violent activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party after they attacked a police station in Madhupur town of the district on Thursday.
The BNP activists, who were staging protests against the arrest of Madhupur municipal mayor Sarkar Shahid, also secretary of Madhupur upazila unit of the party, at one point turned violent, besieged the police station and torched a police car and a motorcycle.
Madhupur police officer-in-charge Mujibur Rahman said that the police had arrested Sarkar Shahid after a case was filed by ward 6 councillor Amjad Hossen on Wednesday night accusing the municipal mayor and panel mayor Mehdi Hasan of vandalising hoardings and firing in the air to strike terror in the town.
Angry BNP activists brandishing lethal weapons attacked the police station after Sarkar Shahid was brought there. The clashes erupted as the police swung into action to disperse the BNP activists besieging the police station.
The police fired around 100 rounds of rubber bullet and tear gas to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.
Tangail district unit BNP secretary Shamsul Alam Tofa told NewAge that food minister Abdur Razzak had ‘ordered’ the arrest of the mayor to ‘eliminate’ BNP from the upazila.
He claimed that about 50 party leaders and activists were critically injured in the police action.
Tension was prevailing in the area.
Assistant police super Abul Hasanat said reinforcements had been dispatched to the area to prevent further troubles.
