President, PM place wreaths in TungiparaBangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.Tungipara, Gopalganj
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today placed wreaths at the grave of the country's founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking the 38th death anniversary of the national leader and also the National Mourning Day.
After placing wreaths on the portrait of Mujib in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital this morning, the President and the Prime Minister flew to Tungipara by an air force helicopter.
President Abdul Hamid first placed the wreath at the grave and the Prime Minister followed him. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also placed wreath at the grave.
After placing the wreaths, the President and the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for sometime as a mark of respect to the memory of Mujib.
Chiefs of the three services also gave salute to the country's founding President, who spearheaded the movement to achieve independence for the country.
A smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh armed forces gave an honour guard.
President's wife Rashida Khanam, PM's daughter Saima Hossain Putul and her husband Khandakar Mashrur Hossain were also present.
A special prayer was offered seeking eternal peace of Mujib, his slain wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib and the departed souls of all victims of August 15, 1975. Prayers were also offered seeking country's continued peace, progress and prosperity.
After placing the wreath, President Abdul Hamid signed the Visitor's Book.
Later flanked by central Awami League leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the organization, laid another wreath on behalf of the party.
Deputy Leader of the Jatiya Sangsad Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Awami League advisory council member Tofail Ahmed, presidium member Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Jafarullah, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, MP, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Civil Aviation Minister Faruk Khan, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad, Railway Minister Mujibul Haq, central AL leaders and president of FBCCI Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed were, among others, present on the occasion.
Parliament members, senior Awami League leaders, Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Principal Secretary Sheikh M Wahid-uz Zaman, PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were also present.
Later, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, party leaders and workers joined a milad mahfil on the premises marking the National Mourning Day, organized by the cabinet division and Gopalganj district administration.
At the outset of the day's programme, the Prime Minister also visited Banani Graveyard in the capital and paid homage to her mother Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib and brothers Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell as well as other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.
