7 arrested for Taindong arson attackOur Correspondent . Khagrachari
The police on Tuesday arrested seven Bengali settlers, including the one who was rumoured to have been abducted by hill people, on charge of arson attack on four villages of hill people at bordering Taindong of Matiranga upazila in Khagrachari
Matiranga police officer-in-charge Mainuddin said that they arrested the seven after one of the victims of the arson attack Anil Chakma filed a case against 30 named and 145 unnamed Bengali settlers for carrying out the attack following a rumour of abduction of a motorcyclist by hill people.
He said that the police arrested the motorcyclist, Kamal, who was rumoured to have been abducted, and Monir Hossain, Amir Hossain, Jahangir Alam, Abed Ali, Abu Hanif and Kamruzzaman.
The superintendent of police in Khagrachari, Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, told reporters that the arrested people would be produced before a court today.
He said that it seemed that the Kamal abduction episode was a false drama.
The police already identified the perpetrators of the attack and operations were on to nab the culprits, he said.
He also claimed that the situation in the troubled area was calm after the people who fled homes had returned on assurance from the state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs.
Bengali settlers had attacked the villages of the hill people on Saturday after a rumour spread that Kalam was abducted by hill men. Several thousand panicked hill people had fled away and took shelter on no-man’s land in Bangladesh-India frontier crossing river Feni.
Later, they returned their homes after CHT affairs sate minister Dipankar Talukdar on Sunday went to the border and assured them of security.
The United People’s Democratic Front’s youth wing Democratic Youth Forum in a statement condemned the remarks of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti leaders accusing the UPDF of inciting Bengalis to attack hill people’s villages.
‘When the local government representatives are rejecting the abduction episode branding it a drama, such remarks of the PCJSS leaders would rather strengthen attackers,’ read the statement signed by the forum president Natun Chandra Chakma.
