SQC had no relation with Pak army in 1971: DefenceNew Age Online
The defence lawyer of the detained BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury Sunday claimed before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 that his client had no relation with the erstwhile Pakistan occupation army in 1971.
While delivering his closing arguments for the second day, the lawyer, Ahsanul Huq Hena, tried to discredit the investigation officer Md Nurul Islam who probed war crimes allegation against Salauddin, saying the IO in his cross-examination, had said there was no photo of Salauddin snapped with the army.
Salauddin, facing 23 charges of crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in Chittagong, was in the dock.
Most of the crimes for which Salauddin is facing the trial were committed in connivance with the Pakistani occupation army.
Hena, quoting the IO’s cross-examination, said, Salauddin was neither a leader of any political party nor a member of Al-Badr or Razakar Bahini at that time.
He said the prosecution had claimed ‘Goods Hill,’ Salauddin’s patriarchal house in Chittagong, as a torture cell though none living around the Goods Hill were brought for examination. Such testimony was essential to learn if any one had heard torturous scream in 1971.
‘When I asked the IO whether he had examined any such person, he said he did not think it was necessary,’ Hena said. ‘How dare he!’ the lawyer wondered.
‘Admittedly, Mr Salauddin was not a member of any of Peace Committee, Al-Badr, Al-Shams, Razakar or Muslim League but he is facing the trial today,’ he said.
His arguments remained incomplete when the tribunal adjourned the proceedings until tomorrow (Monday).
