Protestors demand workers wage and bonus by Aug 5New Age Online
Different left leaning political parties and apparel workers' rights bodies on Friday at separate programmes demanded payment of the wage of July and festival allowance for garment workers within August 5.
The apparel workers would not be able to go to their homes if the wage and festival allowance, equal to the wage of one month, was not paid within the mentioned date, the garment labour leaders said.
National Garment Workers Federation - a garment workers' right body – leaders, at a rally in front of the National Press Club, called on the government to take steps to pay the wage and festival allowances of garment workers within August 5.
Chaired by Amirul Haque Amin, the rally was addressed, among others, by its leaders Safia Parvin, Mohammad Faroque Khan and Nurun Nahar.
The rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads.
Leaders of Bangladesh Sanjukta Sramik Federation at a press conference at its office at Topkhana Road also called on the BGMEA and BKMEA leaders to pay the wage and bonus of the garment workers within August 5.
Mohammad Mokaddem Hossain, the general secretary of the federation, called on the government to amend undemocratic sections of the proposed labour law to make it worker-friendly.
Savar Upazila committee of the Workers Party of Bangladesh leaders at a rally in front of the Rana Plaza at Savar bus stand also demanded the payment of wage and festival allowance of the workers before Eid-ul-Fitr.
They also demanded compensations for the workers affected in the Rana Plaza collapse. More than 1,100 workers were killed and many wounded in the collapse.
Chaired by the Rafiqul Islam Sujan, the secretary of the Savar Upazila unit of the party, the rally was addressed, among others, by its central city secretary Kishore Roy, central leader Abul Hossain and Shahnaz Akter Panna.
