KMCH runs without OTStaff Correspondent . Khulna
Surgical operations at Khulna Medical College Hospital have remained suspended since July 14, causing sufferings to the patients.
The operation theatre of the hospital has remained fully inoperative after a short circuit on the day damaged all its
important surgical instruments.
Many patients of different surgery wards have left the hospital being advised by doctors for medical treatment in private hospitals or clinics either in Khulna or elsewhere.
Sources at the hospital said all important instruments worth Tk 15 lakh of the operation theatre of KMCH were damaged by the short circuit.
The damaged instruments required for surgical operation were not replaced with new ones nor repaired till Thursday as fund for that purpose was yet been given.
The damaged instruments are an anesthesia, a diatherma and three sucker machines, three OT ceiling lights and two air conditioners.
There are still 148 patients in different wards and on floors of the hospital who need surgical operation.
‘But we are quite helpless failing to provide them medical treatment
by surgical operation as
the operation theatre has become inoperative,’ said Dr Paritoshh Kumar Kundu, superintendent of KMCH.
He could not say when new instruments would be purchased to resume
surgical operation as the fund required was not available.
Head of anesthesia department Dr Farid Uddin Ahmed said Tk 15 lakh was needed to repair
the damaged instruments. ‘But we have got no fund so far despite repeated reminders to authorities concerned.’
Dr Mehedi Newaz, associate professor of orthopaedics department, said all his patients who needed surgical operation had been referred to private clinics.
Jahanara Khatun of Maheshwarpasha of Khulna city, who needs urgent surgical operation due to orthopedic problem, said she was not financially solvent for medical treatment in private clinic.
‘I will have to stay here till surgical operation is resumed,’ she said.
