Cops shoot dead protestor objecting police extortionNew Age Online
A young businessman was killed and at least 10 people received bullet injuries when the police opened fire during a clash with businessmen at Taherpur municipal area under Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi on August 1.
The policemen fired on a procession of garment businessmen who brought out a rally protesting police harassment in the excuse of checking motorcycle paperwork.
The deceased was identified as Rubel Hossain, 27, owner of Mohini garment at Taherpur bazar and son of Idris Ali, resident of Thanapara area of the upazila.
Local sources said police, for the last five or six days, have set up check posts from where they extort money from motorcycle users, stopping them in the excuse of checking their paperwork.
Protesting police harassment, local businessmen on Thursday noon brought out a procession and after parading major points of the area they gathered in front the Taherpur police post.
Agitated people at one stage hurled brickbats at the police post and the policemen, in return, charged them with batons, which led to a sporadic clash between cops and agitators.
Police at one stage opened fire on the rally leaving at least 11 people injured. Among the injured Rubel Hossain was found dead on the spot.
Others injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Among them, Hasan Ali, owner of Hazi Bostrolaloi and Firoj Ali, a local, was in critical condition, the on duty physicians of the RMCH said.
Rajshahi police super Alamgir Kabir told New Age that police opened fire as local people laid siege on the police post.
He also said that they are looking into the matter of police’s extortion and harassment.
