Minister defends RAB’s statement on ‘crossfire’New Age Online
Environment and forest minister Hasan Mahmud, also Awami League’s publicity secretary, Thursday defended RAB’s statement on the killing of Juba League leader HM Jahidul Islam Tarek in ‘crossfire’.
The minister said, the Rapid Action Battalion’s statement in this regard ‘seems to be authentic’.
He told this to reporters at the secretariat.
Asked whether the statement given by the elite force on killing of Tarek on shootout was acceptable to AL, he declined to make any comment.
The minister, furthermore, praised the RAB’s role in fighting terrorism.
Juba League leader Tarek, the prime suspect in the killing of another Juba League leader Reazul Haque Khan Milky, and another man, Shah Alam, had been killed in ‘crossfire’ with RAB at Kawla in the city on Wednesday night.
Battalion officials had said the ‘crossfire’ took place at a dark place on Airport Road at about 10:00pm when a group of 12 to 14 miscreants led by Shah Alam tried to take away Tarek from the battalion’s custody on way to Gulshan Police Station from Fortune Hospital in Uttara.
Earlier, investigators had said that the primary investigation found Tarek, Dhaka city south Juba League joint secretary, along with his associates, shot to death the organising secretary of the unit, Reazul, in front of Shoppers’ World at Gulshan early Tuesday.
The battalion media and legal wing director, Wing Commander ATM Habibur Rahman, claimed that armed miscreants in a white car and two motorbikes attacked the battalion team carrying Tarek and tried to snatch him, triggering a gunfight.
Habibur claimed that Tarek received bullets fired by miscreants when he was in the microbus of battalion while Shah Alam was found shot dead on an alleyway some yards off the road.
The officials said that the miscreants intercepted the battalion team suddenly blocking its way with a car.
Six of the accused, including Tarek, were arrested at Uttara by the battalion on Tuesday.
RAB officials Tuesday claimed that detained Tarek had confessed to the killing.
