ARAFAT’S MONEY REPATRIATION
ACC officials surprised at rewardAhammad Foyez
Anti-Corruption Commission officials on Wednesday appeared surprised at Tk 1.3 crore being given in ‘reward’ to Ferdous Ahmed Khan, special assistant to the prime minister, for the commission fund for the efforts he had made in the
recovery of Tk 13.15 crore in 2012 that Arafat Rahman, the youngest son of BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, is alleged to have siphoned off to Singapore.
The officials claimed that it was the first example in the commission’s history that the it had given a reward to an outsider ignoring the commission law.
A senior official told New Age that the commission had taken an initiative to reconsider the matter of of 10 per cent of the total amount repatriated given in ‘reward’ to Ferdous. The commission is now trying to stop the disbursement of the money from its account to avoid criticism.
The commission chairman, M Badiuzzman, on Wednesday did not meet any reporters as at least 20 of them had waited in the front of his office at the commission headquarters for an hour from 1:00pm.
The commission’s public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, however, told reporters that the matter of giving money to Ferdous was still under consideration.
The officials said that more than 10 days ago, the commission chairman and the other two commissioners attended a meeting with Ferdous and decided to give him 10 per cent from the total amount of Tk 13.15 crore.
After the meeting, the commission secretary sent a letter to the cabinet division seeking an approval for giving the amount to Ferdous, the official said.
New Age on Tuesday published a report headline ‘Arafat’s money repatriation: ACC gives Tk 1.3cr to PM’s spl asst.’
A senior commission official said that the commission on July 25 had given an account payee cheque for the amount to Ferdous.
The official said that Ferdous had filed an application with the commission seeking at least 30 per cent of the total amount repatriated in ‘reward’ for his help in recovering the money during the tenure of immediate-past commission chairman Ghulam Rahman. But Ghulam Rahman refused to entertain the application.
