Homage paid to BelalDU Correspondent
People from all walks of life paid their last tributes to poet Belal Mohammad, one of the pioneers of the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, before his body was handed over to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Wednesday.
The valiant freedom fighter died of old-age complications in the capital’s Apollo Hospitals on early Tuesday.
The nation also paid tribute to Belal Mohammad, also one of the Liberation War organisers, with due state honour at the Central Shaheed Minaar on Wednesday.
The Dhaka district administration gave him a guard of honour when a solemn tune was played on bugle.
Hundreds of people thronged to the Shaheed Minaar to pay their last respect to Belal. The coffin, covered by the green-red national flag of Bangladesh, was covered with flowers and wreaths within minutes.
President Abdul Hamid’s assistant private secretary Monirul Islam, and prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s special assistant Mahbubul Alam Hanif paid tribute to the veteran freedom fighter on behalf of the heads of the state and the government.
Foreign minister Dipu Moni from ruling Awami League also placed wreaths at his coffin.
Cultural affairs minister Abul Kalam Azad, leaders of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Workers Party ob Bangladesh, Democratic Left Alliance and Biplobi Workers Party also paid their tributes.
Bangla Academy chairman Anisuzzaman, also Dhaka University professor emeritus, and its director general Shamuzzaman Khan, Bangladesh Film Development Corporation director general Pijush Bandyopadhyay, Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra organisers Kamal Lohani, Fakir Alamgir and Timir Nandi, Dhaka University’s pro-vice-chancellors Nasrin Ahmad and Shahid Akhtar Hossain, BSMMU vice-chancellor Pran Gopal Dutta, Ghatak Dalal Nirum Committee leaders Shahriar Kabir and Muntassir Mamoon, actors ATM Shamuzzaman, Mamunur Rashid and Khairul Alam Sabuj, among others, also placed bequests on the coffin.
Tributes were also paid by National Press Club, Udichi Shilpa Goshti, Khelaghar, Bangladesh College-University Teachers Council, Bangabandhu Sangskiritk Jote, Sangksritik Union and other different socio-cultural and political organisations.
Talking to reporters, they termed the departure as ‘irreparable’ loss to the country.
Anisuzzaman hoped, ‘The young generation would be inspired by the courage and ideology of Belal Mohammad.’
Kamal Lohani told New Age, ‘The people who believe in the spirit of liberation war must recognise the contributions of Belal Mohammad in the liberation war.’ Fakir Alamgir said, ‘A valiant man like Belal Mohammad is needed at this critical time when the war crimes trial has begun.’
Shamuzzaman Khan said that apart from his great contributions in 1971, Belal Mohammad depicted the real facts of the liberation war.
From the Shaheed Minaar, the body was taken to the Dhaka University Central Mosque, for the third namaz-e-janaza. Later the body was handed over to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University authority.
Belal along with others founded Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra at Kalurghat, on March 26, 1971 from where the announcement of the independence of Bangladesh was broadcasted. He has written about 40 books on various literary genres.
