Prices of life saving drugs, medicines and medicare equipment have increased by 20 to 30 per cent in Barisal, making medicare costlier and endangering life of patients.
People involved in the trade have said about 20-25 companies of repute have increased the prices of their products and prices of some of the medicines have increased two fold while prices of some others increased by 20-30 per cent.
According to spot inspection and information collected from medicine traders, price of important medicines like Amoxicillin, Ciprofroxacilin, Voltarin, Fimaxoclav, Libofloxacilin, Algin, Axim, Azithromycin, Sefradin, Omiprazol, Dompridon have increased by 20-30 per cent.
Prices of Domin, Omidon, Peridon, Deflux have increased by 30 per cent while those of Cipracin, Ciflox, Cipra, Neufloxin, Ciprin have increased by 20 percent. Prices of Amlodipin, Dyclophen, and Isniprazol have increased by 25 per cent.
Prices of other medicines have also registered increase according to the direction of the head office of the companies and medical representatives of different companies.
Prices of different medical equipment like catheters, catguards, licoplast bandages also increased 30-40 per cent in the past two months, the medicine and drug store sources said.
One medicine seller Aktar Hossain of Hossain Medical Hall in the city informed that the large companies taking monopoly advantage have been increasing the prices of medicine again and again without any prior notice.
Kazi Mofizul Islam Kamal, president of the Bangladesh Chemist and Druggist Association Barisal unit, said the government had no control over the medicine and drug manufacturers and importers.
Lack of monitoring creates syndicate of wholesalers of imported medicines, drugs, medical equipment, and giving bribe to high officials of drug administration, they increase prices at their will, alleged Rafikul Islam Pintu, district secretary of the organisation.
Sarwar Hossain, guardian of a patient, asked if the manufactures could supply medicines to public hospitals at fair prices, why they could not supply medicines to the open market at fair price.
Difference of prices in public and private sectors increases smuggling of medicines from public health service providers to the open market, he added.
Medicine prices of same generic sources differ by 50 to 100 per cent from company to company and manufacturers, giving bribe to physicians to prescribe high-priced medicines, forced patients to buy the drugs, said Nahid Sultana, a patient.
In-charges of the depots of different pharmaceutical companies and Saidur Rahman, administrative officer Barisal office of Opsonin Pharmaceutical Company, one of the biggest in the country, admitted to the increase in prices of these items.
They, however, declined to give any explanation of increasing medicine and drug prices.
They said the Barisal office could not say anything about the increase in price and it was only the head office in Dhaka, which decided the price hike.
Zahid Hossain, assisant director, drug administration Barisal office, said, ‘We cannot take any action in this matter as prices of medicine, drugs, medical equipment are monitored and fixed by the head office of the administration.’
