Activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir on Thursday brought out sudden processions and clashed with police in the city and elsewhere.
In Gaibandha town, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League torched a Jamaat
office and two Shibir-run messes after clashes with Jamaat-Shibir men.
In Dhaka, the police detained 10 people suspecting them to be activists of Jamaat-Shibir.
The Jamaat-Shibir men staged the demonstrations in protest at ‘anarchy’ and ‘terror’ unleashed by Chhatra League and demanding release of their leaders facing war crimes charges.
The police charged into a procession of Jamaat-Shibir Shyamoli in the bus stop area in the city at about 10:00am.
The Jamaat-Shibir men brought out the sudden procession from a lane and came to the bus stop area when the police arrived on the scene and charged batons and used tear gas to disperse the marchers.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police duty officer Bazlar Rahman said the police detained three people from the scene on suspicion they might be Jamaat men.
Police also allegedly picked up Shibir’s publicity secretary Abu Saleh Mohammad Yahih.
Yahia’s family and Shibir alleged that the detective police detained him from Dhaka-Sylhet highway on his way to Sylhet.
But Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner (media and community service) Rabiul Islam said he had no such information.
Several hundred Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession at Arambagh in the city at about 10:00am and vandalised three vehicles.
Chase and counter chase took place after the police arrived on the scene. The Jamaat-Shibir men blasted two crude bombs while leaving the scene, said witnesses.
The police dispersed the protesters and detained six people in the area, said Motijheel police officer-in-charge Hayatuzzaman adding that they were checking the identities of the detainees.
In Gaibandha, Bangladesh Chhatra League activists backed by the locals set fire to the district Jamaat office, reported United News of Bangladesh.
At least 13 people were injured in clashes between police and Shibir activists in the railway station area in the town.
New Age Narayanganj correspondent reported that several hundred Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession from Chashara area and marched towards Chandmari demanding release of their leaders.
In Jhalakati, the police arrested Shibir’s district unit president M Abdullah al-Mamun in the launch terminal area on Wednesday, reported United News of Bangladesh.
The police said they suspected that Mamun might have been involved in plots for subversion in the area.
